Mammoth Hot Springs Terraces

Mammoth Hot Springs is a major thermal area within Yellowstone. Liberty Cap and Palette Spring are located on the Lower Terraces.

Lower Terraces

A substance called travertine (calcium carbonate) forms these spectacular terraces. Calcium carbonate is a white substance and the colors found among the terraces are a result of tiny bacteria and algae.

Opal Terrace, across the road from Liberty Cap, became active in 1926 and has been depositing up to one foot of travertine per year.
