This page will provide an overview of a variety of Web projects I
have worked on using ToolBook, either doing all the development or
assisting in the development of the final product.

From 1999 to 2002, I supported a Web Project for the National
Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (Washington,
DC) and LearnStudentAid.org (a new learning community for
student financial aid professionals), providing consultation,
training, and development. With LearnStudentAid.org, first-rate
financial aid training from NASFAA is unrestricted by time or
distance. Using World Wide Web technology already on his or her
office desktop, the novice financial aid administrator can start
learning the business of financial aid the first day on the job.
Experienced aid administrators can expand and update their
understanding of new and complex issues as soon as they arise.
LearnStudentAid.org connects financial aid professionals, who help
each other learn. LearnStudentAid.org is a project in partnership
with Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation and the University of
North Carolina at Wilmington. This project was directed by Ellen V.
Blackmun, Director of Electronic Services Projects at NASFAA.

During the Winter of 2002, I worked as a contractor for Geneva
Consulting Group on an onsite job for Arrow
Electronics, Inc (Operations Training Department) on Long
Island, NY. For this project, we successfully converted content from
a series of mainframe-based cbt courses into a web-based training
format using Toolbook. A sample of one of these courses is shown below.
Sample 1 - This is a sample of a typical simulation page. The student
is asked to select a number from the menu.

Sample 2 - This is a sample of the resulting screen when the student
makes the wrong choice. Note that the correct choice is highlighted
in yellow and the wrong answer feedback appears at the top of the screen.

Innovative Learning, LLC |

 |
Over the past two years I have worked as a consultant on two projects
for Ralph Spencer of Innovative Learning, LLC . Both of these
projects made extensive use of the HTTP Post process in ToolBook to
post and retrieve information from databases on a Web Server.
Ralph Spencer is the principal of Innovative Learning, LLC and the
Real Estate Academy. He is a national consultant and trainer focusing
on the commercial real estate industry. A part of his practice
includes e-learning in which he primarily uses Toolbook. He has
developed courses for CD-ROM and web deployment for both outside
clients and his own use. Ralph has successfully integrated web based
training with instructor led training to create blended solutions.
Ralph is not a "techie". His focus is on developing
solutions that improve individual's and company's productivity.

Course:
What Makes a Professional? Code of Ethical
Principles and Standards of Professional Practice |
|
 |
Situation: A national association needed an online certification
course to be offered as an alternative to it's current instructor led
classroom course. The online course needed login and registration,
bookmarking, progress tracking, participant interaction within the
content and a final exam with certificate for successful completion.
A server side database was required for student tracking and
management reports.
Solution: Click2Learn's Toolbook product was used for the end user
client course, Microsoft Access was used for the server side database
and .ASP was used for the middleware. The HTTP post process in
Toolbook was the primary enabling functionality for the transparent
communications between the end user client and the server database.
Results: The association has been able to offer every member access
to the required course, either via instructor delivered classroom or
Internet delivered online. This has proven crucial in the enforcement
of the association's mandated course completion requirement. The
Internet online version has been perfect for the remote members and
also for those busy members who don't want to stop their daily
activities to travel to some destination to attend the instructor led
course. The Internet online course has received high evaluations and
by having course delivery options, member satisfaction is higher.

Course:
The Essence of the Business |
|
 |
Situation: Client needed to convert an instructor led seminar to a
Internet delivered online workshop. The online course needed login
and registration, bookmarking, progress tracking, participant
interaction within the content, video and a final written exercise.
The client had several hours of video from the live seminar that they
wanted to integrate into the online workshop. Also, there was a need
for a server side database for student tracking and management reports.
Solution: Click2Learn's Toolbook product was used for the end user
client course, Microsoft Access was used for the server side database
and .ASP was used for the middleware. The HTTP post process in
Toolbook was the primary enabling functionality for the transparent
communications between the end user client and the server database.
The video challenge was handled by creating a hybrid local CD-ROM and
Internet application, the course content resided on the server and
the video clips on the local CD. This approach enabled the client to
deliver more than 1 hour of quality video, in clips of 1 to 8
minutes, without worry of Internet bandwidth.
Results: A course that previously required 31/2 hours of classroom
time can now be completed in approximately 2 hours. Participant
evaluations indicate a higher satisfaction with the online experience
than the live classroom, particularly for several quantitative
exercises. The video clips play flawlessly and the hybrid approach
between the Internet and local CD is transparent. Participants like
the bookmarking functionality that enables them to access the course
at will and the typical participant visits the online workshop 3 to 5
times before completion.

United States
Department of Agriculture

From 2002-2004, I worked on a contract with the United States
Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service to
place some of their employee testing and training online. This is a
contract with the National
Employee Development Center in Ft. Worth, TX and is managed by
Roger Montague.

Nutrient and Pest Management Considerations in Conservation
Planning Posttests
For this project, 4 Posttests were created in ToolBook and the
employee information, question responses, and test scores were
submitted to a SQL database on a database server using the HTTP Post
process in ToolBook and ASP. Each test consisted of roughly 50
multiple choice questions |

Effective Training Location Leaders
In 2004 our plans are to make online training courses such as this
508 Compliant. Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act (29 U.S.C.
794d), as amended by the Workforce Investment Act of 1998 (P.L.
105-220), August 7, 1998 requires that Federal agencies' electronic
and information technology be accessible to people with disabilities.
This project is just beginning and will provide the National Employee
Development Center with the tools and processes to ensure all their
ToolBook projects are fully 508-compliant. Check back for a progress report.

NRCS Field Office Technical Guide
The NRCS Field Office Technical Guide contains the primary scientific
references for NRCS. It contains technical information about the
conservation of soil, water, air, and related plant and animal
resources. I am in the beginning stages of developing a simulation in
connection with the staff of the National Employee Development Center
to replace a static training program with a fully interactive
program. This will be done using the new ToolBook Simulations Editor.
Check back for a progress report.

Children's National Medical
Center
Pediatric Oral Health for the Primary
Care Provider
This was one of several modules I provided consulting for the
Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC. Each
module provided a login and small tracking system for access to
the information and each module contained a text, graphics,
review questions, and various interactive elements to enhance
the learning. |

University of Miami Medical
Center
Medicare Compliance Plan
This was a project I started but never was completed for the
University of Miami Medical Group. The goal of this project was
to provide training in Medicare and billing guidelines for
residents. |

| An Electronic Anesthesia Medical
Record System Computer-Based User’s Guide for Picis
This was another project that was started but never put into
place due to a change in the system being used. It was intended
to provide incoming medical students training prior to having to
use this system in the operating room. Many screens are
interactive such that the learner can click or move their mouse
over various parts of the software screenshots to get more
information.
