Introduction to ToolBook Instructor 2004 SP 1

This page will provide information related to the follow-up release of ToolBook Instructor 2004, referred to as Service Pack 1. The page also provides information related to the new company.  This page also serves as an update to the book The Actions Editor, HTTP Post, and Simulations in ToolBook Instructor 2004. as well as a supplement to the book An Introduction to ToolBook Instructor 8.5.  There are not enough changes to prompt a rewrite of either of these books.

The New Company

The merger between Click2learn and Docent has produced a new company named SumTotal Systems, Inc.  This is the logo that now is used for the "canned" index.html page when you publish to the Web.

Launching ToolBook

When you launch ToolBook Instructor 2004 SP1, this is the Splash screen that now appears.  Note the new logo and new company information.

The Startup dialog box now displays the graphic shown at the top of this page.

Changes in the Simulation Editor

Tired of that red rectangle that appears around evaluation objects such as input fields in your Simulations?

The Miscellaneous Section of the Property Grid for the Simulation now has another property that can be set: Evaluation error highlight.  When you click on the word Red, you get the Color Tray shown here that allows you to define a highlight color.  One thought that immediately comes into my mind is that if you do not want the highlight, you can now click None.

The Miscellaneous Section of the Property Grid for the Simulation now also has another property that can be set: Automatically continue.  Clicking on the value for this property brings up the Automatically Continue dialog box shown here.  From this box, you can set the Simulation up to automatically continue after a defined number of seconds for any or all of the modes, thus eliminating the need for the Continue button if that is desired.  Note that in Practice and Assessment modes, the delay begins when the number of attempts is reached.

A significant enhancement is the area of edit text fields (input fields as evaluation objects).  We now have similar abilities as that found with the Fill-in-the-Blank Question Object.  Clicking on the value for the field brings up the Edit Text Field Response dialog box shown here.  Note that you can match case (or ignore case), match word order, enabled "sounds like", and ignore punctuation.  Note the addition of Support wildcard character which is a great addition.

Also note the addition of Multiple correct responses.  Clicking this box and then OK gives the dialog box shown below.  From this dialog box, you can edit, add, or remove responses.  This is a great new feature that will be welcomed by a lot of folks doing Simulations.

An issue related to having multiple responses and/or using the wildcard character is what response is shown in demonstration mode and what is used when instructions and feedback is automatically generated.  The Alert that is shown here tells us that the first response is the one that is used.
