TCC Publishing, Inc's
new Award Winning SmartSim product (Sumtotal Design Awards, TBCON 2007) takes advantage of
the new SmartStyles and SmartPages features of
ToolBook Instructor 9, and we provide a set of SmartSim Styles, SmartSim
Pages, and SmartSim Editors for building Simulation lessons.
What is SmartSim?
SmartSim for ToolBook v9, is an
integrated approach to producing content with the newly released ToolBook
Instructor v9. ToolBook developers who are seeking an efficient approach to the
construction of interactive Software Simulations will truly appreciate the
versatile template driven functionality and authoring flexibility that is
SmartSim. SmartSim evolved from the philosophy that putting prepared
content into an e learning lesson should not be the most difficult part of the
development process. The richness of how content is displayed should also
not be simplified for the sake of efficient authoring. A person who does not
have much ToolBook experience should be able to author sophisticated interactive
lessons.
Integration with ToolBook Instructor 9
A new design feature of the ToolBook
Instructor v9 is the incorporation of SmartStyles and Smart Pages. This
feature allows subject matter experts to work with a variety of pre programmed
page types and designs. SmartSim fully integrates with the new ToolBook
Smartstyle model. There are 5 basic professionally styled book designs
that can be interchanged at any time. SmartSim has over 25 templated pages with
sophisticated interactivity pre built into them.
Software Simulations using SmartSim
Each template page, both Simulation and
Non Simulation has a uniquely designed editor to set text, graphics, and special
functionality that distinguishes the Simulation page types. Making
settings for the simulation such as instructions, feedback, formatting text,
correct answers for input fields, and the colors of correct or incorrect
indicators is now set using a logically designed editor. Additionally, Editors
provide a stylistic guide for instructional writing.
The Details
The SmartSim Styles allow you to
select a style for your Simulation lesson, and then quickly change it within any
given book by just dragging a new SmartSim Style from a SmartSim Styles Catalog
Category. In the
example here, a blue style has been applied to a Simulation page.

The basic components of this style (and any of our
other styles) include:
-
The background image
-
The button graphics
-
The font combinations for the primary text
fields such as title, instructions, feedback, and the page widget.
TCC Publishing, Inc's SmartSim Pages are a set of pages (added
from a SmartSim Pages Catalog Category) containing all of the pre-programmed
functionality for a variety of different Simulation scenarios as well as several
non-simulation page types.
A SmartSim Editor for each SmartSim Page gives you the ability to quickly input instructional text and
feedback text without having to negotiate the slightly complicated Simulation
Editor that is built into ToolBook.

In addition to the editors for the various pages, a Title Page Editor allows you
to set up many default properties for the Simulations in the current book
including the location of the screenshot, default feedback strings for feedback,
the colors of highlighters, and how an input field behaves:
