Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the best known of all the lighthouses in North Carolina. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, located on Hatteras Island just outside of the village of Buxton, has stood guard over the "graveyard of the Atlantic" since 1803.

Over the past decade officials have fought an ongoing assault of waves in order to save the Hatteras Lighthouse. Engineers have used sand replenishment and sandbag reinforcement, planted of artificial seaweed, and steel-groin placement to help preserve this magnificant lighthouse.
